In March 1998 Mercedes-Benz introduced the Atego as the most advanced light and middleweight truck range in the world.
The 7.5-tonner is aimed at short to medium-distance urban delivery operations. The four-pot, 4.25-litre, 0M904 LA is the standard power option at 7.5, 9.5, 10.5, 12.0 and 13.5 tonnes, rated at 152hp or 170hp.
The four-cylinder engine needed a big step up in power to compete with the previously specified six-pot units, but it cuts about 90kg from the weight of the 7.5-tonner, where every kilo of payload counts.
The Atego engines have three valves per cylinder with electronic engine management and unit injectors operating at 1,600bar. The 152hp version, uprating the base 7.5-tonner to an 815 generates 12% more power and torque than was provided for previous models, but it still runs quietly enough to avoid the need for engine encapsulation. Cab insulation is excellent and a five-speed ZF synchromesh gearbox is matched to the torque of the 815.
Uniquely at this weight, full air ventilated disc brakes come as standard. ABS anti-lock braking is regulated by Mercedes-Benz's Telligent control system, only seen before on the heavier Actros models. Proven parabolic steel suspension comes with anti-roll bars front and rear.
Axles rated at 3.4 and 5.0 tonnes.
The U-section frame is new. A Z-section front sub-frame gives a low mounting location for the engine and gearbox, which contributes to the low cab height.
The Atego cabs are wider than on the old LK models-even the S day cab has 25% more space, which is used to accommodate a third seat. The SE is extended to the rear by 180mm to give more room for storage.
The one-step cab access is straightforward, light controls make the Atego about as easy to drive as a 7.5-tonner gets. Handling at speed and under heavy braking is stable.
The four-cylinder engine is smooth, and very responsive.
Electric windows, central locking and air conditioning. With its wide cab it also looks good.
